Understanding Index Fragmentation

Fragmentation occurs when the logical order of pages in an index does not match the physical order in the data file. This can cause SQL Server to perform extra reads, slowing down queries.

There are two types of fragmentation: internal and external. Internal fragmentation means pages have free space, while external fragmentation means pages are out of order.

• Internal fragmentation leads to inefficient space usage.
• External fragmentation causes increased disk I/O.
• Both types degrade query performance.

Measuring Fragmentation

SQL Server provides dynamic management views (DMVs) to check index fragmentation levels. The most common DMV is sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats.

You can query this DMV to get fragmentation percentage and page counts for indexes.

• Use sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats to assess fragmentation.
• Focus on indexes with high fragmentation and significant size.
• Fragmentation above 30% usually requires rebuilding.
• Fragmentation between 5% and 30% may require reorganizing.

Index Rebuild vs Reorganize

Rebuilding an index drops and recreates it, removing fragmentation completely and updating statistics. It requires more resources and locks the index during the operation.

Reorganizing an index defragments the leaf level pages by physically reordering them. It is an online operation and uses fewer resources but is less thorough.

• Rebuild is more resource-intensive but more effective.
• Reorganize is lighter and can run concurrently with user queries.
• Choose based on fragmentation level and system load.

Performing Index Maintenance

You can perform index maintenance using T-SQL commands or SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).

Common commands include ALTER INDEX REBUILD and ALTER INDEX REORGANIZE.

• Example to rebuild an index: ALTER INDEX [IndexName] ON [TableName] REBUILD;
• Example to reorganize an index: ALTER INDEX [IndexName] ON [TableName] REORGANIZE;
• Use ONLINE=ON option for rebuilds to minimize locking (Enterprise Edition).

Automating Index Maintenance

Regular index maintenance is essential. Automate it using SQL Server Agent jobs or maintenance plans.

Maintenance plans can be configured to reorganize or rebuild indexes based on fragmentation thresholds.
