Understanding CTE Basics

A CTE is defined using the WITH keyword followed by a query that produces a result set.

It can be referenced like a table or view within the main query that follows.

CTEs improve query readability and can be recursive or non-recursive.

• Syntax starts with WITH cte_name AS (query)
• CTEs are temporary and scoped to a single statement
• Can be chained or multiple CTEs can be defined in one WITH clause

Non-Recursive CTE Challenges

Non-recursive CTEs are used to simplify complex joins, aggregations, or filtering logic.

They help modularize queries by breaking them into logical building blocks.

• Use CTEs to isolate filtering conditions

• Improve query readability by naming intermediate results

Recursive CTE Challenges

Recursive CTEs call themselves to process hierarchical or sequential data.

They consist of an anchor member (base query) and a recursive member that references the CTE itself.

• Can be limited with MAXRECURSION option
