Types of Variable Scope in Java

Java variables can have different scopes based on their declaration location.

Local Variable Scope

Local variables are declared within methods, constructors, or blocks and can only be used there.

They are created when the block is entered and destroyed when it is exited.

• Cannot be accessed outside the method or block.
• Must be initialized before use.
• Used for temporary storage during method execution.

Instance Variable Scope

Instance variables belong to an object created from a class.

Each object has its own copy of instance variables.

• Declared inside a class but outside any method.
• Accessible by all instance methods of the class.
• Default values are assigned if not explicitly initialized.

Class Variable (Static) Scope

Class variables are declared with the static keyword inside a class.

They belong to the class itself rather than any object instance.

• Shared among all instances of the class.
• Accessible via the class name or object references.
• Useful for constants or shared data.

Variable Shadowing

Variable shadowing occurs when a variable declared in an inner scope has the same name as one in an outer scope.

The inner variable 'shadows' the outer one within its scope.

• Can cause confusion if not managed carefully.
• Java resolves variable references to the nearest scope first.
